“Green” Building

It is the intention that the Pacific Sport Institute be designed as a “green building”, obtaining LEED Gold certification through the Canada Green Building Council.

Site

  • All stormwater coming from the site will be cleaned, slowed and put back into the creek.
  • Use of bioswales and native planting.
  • No need to be on the Saanich stormwater grid.
  • Additional parking will have permeable surfaces.
  • Reduced amount of additional asphalt in campus parking.
  • All weather playing field surface filtrates rainwater naturally and requires no chemicals for growth and no CO2 emissions from mowing.
  • Enhanced community bike trails lit by solar LED down lights.
  • Covered and secure bike storage and showers for cyclists who travel to and from the site.
  • No permanent irrigation on site.
  • The building will not add to the heat island effect caused by typical buildings and sites.
  • The building will not contribute to night light pollution.

Water and Energy

  • Target to reduce potable water use by 20%
  • Use of a durable and efficient building envelope to reduce energy requirements.
  • Sustainable building design:
    • Will target 50% energy requirement reduction from typical buildings.
    • 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions with all HVAC equipment not using CFCs or HCFCs.

Materials and Resources

  • Target 90% of construction waste material diverted from landfill by adopting a
  • waste management plan.
  • 5% to 10% of materials will be recycled material from other buildings.
  • The materials used will have a significant recycled content.
  • Transportation of materials to the building will be minimized.
  • The building envelope will be certified for its durability.

Indoor Wellness

  • The indoor environmental quality of this building will be of exceptional quality:
  • Instituting an indoor environmental construction plan to allow the building to air out for two weeks before occupancy.
  • Use only materials that have limited off-gassing to the most stringent standards.
  • Control construction activities to minimize dust and off gassing.
  • Interior occupant control over their comfort to enhance occupant wellness by providing:
    • Extensive use of day-lighting
    • Better interior control over heat and light.
    • Use of opening windows to enhance occupant comfort.
    • Use of green cleaning system to reduce chemicals being introduced into the building.

Meeting the needs of Community, Camosun and PISE

Community Access

Victoria has a high-level of participation in sport, recreation, and health and wellness activities. A significant portion of older residents recognize the role of remaining active and, at the other end of the spectrum, youth are active in sport and recreation. Regrettably, facilities in the region are over-subscribed and under-funded. It is difficult to find gymnasium space for youth sports, and many youth and adult field sports organizations experience an inadequate supply of all-weather playing fields. The Institute’s facilities will be accessible for community use, including services such as sport medicine.

Camosun College

Despite its size, with 22,000 full and part-time learners, the College has very limited sport, recreation, health and wellness facilities for staff and students. The Institute will provide a major resource for the College and serve as a centre for sport education.

PacificSport Victoria

20% of Canadian Olympic and Paralympics athletes reside in Victoria. PacificSport Victoria is a major training centre for performance athletes, but has no centralized facilities for training and coaching these athletes, sport medicine or sport science.

A National and Provincial Centre

The Institute will build on the increasing recognition of the positive relationship between sport and health and wellness. The collective expertise, programming and facilities will create new knowledge, programs and practices in sport and health that will have a major educational value across the country. There will be a particular focus on the development of sport technology, drawing on existing innovations by PacificSport Victoria.
