Close to 50 representatives from the health and fitness sector regionally attended an input gathering session at Camosun College on June 13, 2007, to learn about the PSI vision and share ideas about possible community programming that could be offered through the Institute. Ideas that came forward through the session about the PSI’s potential role in preventative health, rehabilitation and lifestyle management included:
  • A leadership role in exercise and fitness advocacy
  • A catalyst within the community to bring together/mobilize community resources
  • A catalyst for change
  • Post-hospital rehab service; follow up treatment for out-patients
  • Delivering a leading-edge wellness program, including workplace wellness and lifestyle management
Adaptive sport and physical education programs for those with chronic illness
Injury prevention workshops
  • Application of clinical and applied research
  • An education resource centre
  • A collaborative partner with VIHA in delivery of health/fitness services
  • Community outreach programming
  • Referral service
  • Fitness/Health Assessments
Suggested health and fitness courses/programs/services that might potentially be delivered by the Institute included:

  • Speakers series delivered by renowned experts
  • Presentations on international trends and practices
  • Presentations/courses for designated groups; ie seniors, those suffering from arthritis or obesity etc.
  • Science-based lecture series
  • In service programs for professionals i.e. kinesiologists, health care professionals in cardiac care, elder care etc.
  • Nutrition Courses
  • Personal training courses
  • ABC’s of movement for kids and parents
  • Training rehab professionals
  • Fitness Leadership courses
  • Transitional programs from therapy to exercise to fitness
  • Certification courses i.e CAN FIT PRO, NSCA (',National Strength Training and Conditioning, ACSM (',American College of Sports Medicine)
