K-12 Education Sector, June 18, 2007

Approximately 30 individuals representing the K – 12 education system regionally attended the PSI community programming input gathering session on June 18, 2007, learning about the vision for the PSI and sharing insights into possible community programming that might be offered through the Institute. The input from this sector about the potential role for PSI in areas of youth wellness, leadership and social skill development through sport and active living included:

  • ABC’s of sport
  • Professional development for teachers; in service
  • Parental education: emphasizing skill development over competition
  • Programs for those not interested/motivated to participate in sport and exercise
  • Generating fitness standards/benchmarks
  • Provision of interns from Sport Ed programs to assist teachers in the Schools
  • Fitness testing in the schools
  • Activity camps
  • Dual credit courses in the sport area
  • Olympians at Schools

Courses, programs, services that might be delivered by the Institute included the following suggestions:

  • Fundamental skills (',ABC’s, physical literacy for different age groups, movement clinics for kids, teacher training/appreciation of physical literacy)
  • Event support/ internships
  • After school programming
 

The Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence is a unique and holistic sport development model that will fuel Canada’s sport performance, build a healthier nation and develop role models to inspire physical literacy.
