January 3, 2008 How sport technology enhances performance for all – Camosun College Lecture Series Sport performance experts, Dr. Tim Walzak and Dr. Gordon Sleivert, co-present “Playstation to Podium”, the first in a series of Pacific Sport Institute lectures through Continuing Education at Camosun College. The lectures are part of the College’s overall sport and wellness education programming and are designed to be of interest and value to athletes, health professionals, coaches, parents and teachers. “Understanding and developing our physical literacy pathways will become increasingly important,” says Sleivert. “The connections between sports technology, innovation and health are important to peak performance athletes and the well-being of all Canadians.” Playstation to Podium: Part 1 is scheduled Thursday, January 17 from 7 to 9pm and provides strategies for how athletes, coaches and individuals can reach personal bests. Playstation to Podium: Part 2 runs Thursday, January 31 from 7 to 9pm. Technology is a two-sided beast. On one hand, it has been blamed for increasing sedentary lifestyles – but on the other, it has greatly enhanced quality of life. This lecture demonstrates how technologies enhance athletic performance, and how they can also be used to achieve personal performance goals whether in sport, health or work. The lectures cost $15 + GST each, and take place at - 30 – For media inquiries Presenter Profiles: Dr. Tim Walzak has been active in the Canadian research and technology community for more than twenty years. In December, 2007, Dr. Walzak was named as the B.C. Regional Innovation Chair in Sport Technology at Prior to his move to Dr. Walzak is a technology transfer specialist and materials engineer with extensive experience in a wide range of innovation-related activities, including basic research, experimental design, development of applications and prototypes, protection of intellectual property and identification of commercialization opportunities. Dr. Gordon Sleivert has been working and studying in Applied Exercise and Sport Physiology for 15 years. Dr. Sleivert is currently the Vice President, Sport Performance for PacificSport. Dr. Sleivert was appointed as the Canadian Team Exercise Physiologist at the Athens 2004 Summer Olympics and continues working to enhance performance. Lecture Series details: Playstation to Podium: Part 1 Achieving a podium performance requires tens of thousands of hours invested in training, the nurturing of talent, and a relentless pursuit of perfection across multiple performance factors. Today’s athletes and coaches must understand and work in physiology, psychology, nutrition, biomechanics, and cutting edge technology to be the best in the world.
