November 8, 2005 Pacific Sport Institute Receives $2 Million Investment from Hbc Victoria, BC - The Pacific Sport Institute at Camosun College received a huge boost to its capital campaign today with the announcement of a $2 million investment from Hbc, a move that received accolades from Olympic athletes to sport and education leaders alike. The Pacific Sport Institute (',PSI), a partnership initiative of PacificSport Victoria and Camosun College, is a visionary nexus of sport science and sport medicine expertise, educational programming in sport leadership, coaching science, athlete and coach development and wellness; and sport facilities within a single centre in Victoria. And with a major focus on sport technology and innovation, the Institute is aimed to play a key role in athlete performance at the 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Beijing and podium performances by 2010 and 2012. “I am elated to hear that a member of corporate Canada not only has the belief and generosity to support the 2010 Games but they further understand the importance of athlete development,” said Iain Brambell, a two-time Olympic rower and Executive Director of BC Athlete Voice.“ Hbc’s contribution together with the technology and expertise housed within the Pacific Sport Institute will help Canadian athletes lead rather than compete to be participants.” In addition to its investment in the PSI, Hbc also announced a $20 million fundraising campaign fundraising campaign to support Canadian athletes over seven years and unveiled the Canadian Team uniform for the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Torino, ITA. The President and CEO of PacificSport Victoria, Roger Skillings, commended Canada’s oldest corporation for its investment in an initiative that connects legacies from the past and future. “PacificSport evolved from a legacy of the Victoria 1994 Commonwealth Games into Canada’s leading sport centre network, thanks in part to the leadership shown by George Heller as CEO of the Victoria Games Society. This Institute is a legacy for the future as we continue to power sport performance and put more Canadian athletes on the podium at international events around the world.” Camosun President Liz Ashton says Hbc’s support is a much-welcome addition to the corporation’s initial investment more than two years ago. “Hbc had the vision to invest $100,000 in the Institute when the ideas were still formulating between the two partners; today’s commitment is the impetus to get the capital campaign rolling for an Institute that will be the cornerstone for a sport development model that is community-based and education-centred,” she said. “This investment, in addition to the planning that is now well underway, will help to position this province as a leader in the area of sport development and wellness.”
