An Innovative Community Resource The Pacific Sport Institute, a partnership initiative between Camosun College and PacificSport Victoria, will be a community resource like no other. This unique new sport development model will welcome the region's population, young and old alike, to programming, facilities and services related to sport and wellness. The Institute will comprise sport education programming, sport technology and innovation, sport and wellness research, sport medicine and sport science practitioners, a 2.5 gymnasium, strength training and fitness facilities, classroom and ancillary space and a lit, all-weather playing field. The Institute will serve athletes from the playground to the podium, helping our community maintain its position as having one of the healthiest populations in the country through sport and activity. The Pacific Sport Institute will cost $36 million to build and will be self-sustaining once it opens its doors in the fall of 2008. The Province of British Columbia has committed $18.5 million to the project and the first major national corporate donor, Hbc, has also committed $2 million to the fundraising campaign to date. The regional economic impact of the Institute will be $23 million annually and the equivalent of 370 full time jobs will be supported through Institute-related spending in the region once operational. Taxation revenue resulting from Institute-related spending will exceed $7 million per year. The existence and operation of the Institute will contribute to the growth of the Canadian sport technology and sport tourism industries as well. Sport has been shown to have enormous direct and indirect impacts on the economy; investing in sport research and development makes sound business sense. In 1996, 1.1% of the Canadian GDP came from this sector and BC accounted for 17% of this total. The sport science and research focus within the Institute will contribute to economic growth in these fields within the region and to building Canada's name in sport technology and human performance development and innovation.
