Architect and Project Manager selected for Pacific Sport Institute project

Victoria   Camosun College and PacificSport Victoria announced today that Cannon Design has been selected to design the Pacific Sport Institute on the College’s Interurban Campus.  Cannon Design was one of seven proponents to a Request for Proposal (',RFP) process earlier this summer and was selected based on their depth of experience in conceptualizing and designing integrated sport training centres that support high performance athletes.

“The selection of the architect was a critical next step on the Pacific Sport Institute project,” said Camosun’s President Liz Ashton.  “Cannon Design has international expertise in high performance sport and community recreation facility planning and design.  Bob Johnston, the lead on the project, has over 20 years experience on a wide range of sport-related venues and is acknowledged as a leader in sport and recreation architecture.  Their goal is to create a world-class facility and we are confident they will do just that.  It’s very exciting to know that we have this caliber of architectural experience right here in Victoria, too.”

Cannon Design specializes in projects like the Pacific Sport Institute.  Their project portfolio includes a range of related projects including Canada’s first LEED Gold recreation and wellness centre – Cardel Place in Calgary.  The Pacific Sport Institute will be designed to a minimum LEED Gold environmental standard.  Cannon Design was also the architect for the Talisman Centre for Sport and Wellness, both in Calgary, the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Kinesiology, the Collecutt Centre in Red Deer, Alberta and the University of Manitoba’s Pan American Games Facility.

The two founding partners for the Pacific Sport Institute also announced CitySpaces Consulting as the Project Manager for this next phase of the initiative.  CitySpaces was one of four firms that responded to the RFP process.  CitySpaces was selected based on the comprehensiveness and quality of their submission, the firm’s extensive project management experience, its positive reputation, and the fact that, in addition to being a Victoria-based firm, the proposal offered best overall value.  Other projects managed by CitySpaces include the redevelopment of Mount St. Mary Hospital site, assisting with the set-up of the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority, and facilitating a visioning process for the development of sports facilities and student housing for the 2005 Canada Summer Games at the University of Regina.

The Pacific Sport Institute is a $36 million project and is scheduled to open in the spring of 2008.  The Province announced an $18.5 million contribution toward the project in May.  Federal support of $11 million is being sought and a capital campaign will seek to raise the remaining $7 million.  Contracts will be negotiated with both of these proponents and will include a proviso that allows for cancellation should the project not proceed for any reason.
