Camosun’s new sport and exercise education program shapes up

Camosun College’s newly formed Centre for Sport and Exercise Education is shaping up with a full class of 37 students in its first program, the two-year Exercise and Wellness diploma program, starting this week.

Leading the College’s new Exercise and Wellness program is Lori Zehr, an exercise physiologist actively involved in promoting physical activity, wellness and active lifestyles.  Zehr, who comes to Camosun from the BC Ministry of Health where she was Manager of Physical Activity and Healthy Living, will oversee and teach a number of the courses in the new program that aims to prepare students for careers in wellness education, exercise and fitness leadership.

“The response to the Exercise and Wellness program has been impressive for a first-time program,” says Dr. Peter Rehor, Director of Sport Education at Camosun College.  “This two-year diploma curriculum is integral to the development of the Pacific Sport Institute as a leader in the health and wellness field.”

Camosun College and PacificSport Victoria are partners in the Pacific Sport Institute, a facility that will combine health and wellness learning, performance sport services and community programming.

The Exercise and Wellness diploma is a two-year program that provides students with knowledge and experience in the foundation of sport sciences, fitness and lifestyle skills and methodology, health promotion and intervention.  Areas of study include how physical activity and healthy lifestyles contribute to optimal health and wellness, exercise adoption/adherence and environmental impacts of sedentary lifestyles.  Students will be exposed to the latest research and practice designed to enhance fitness, wellness and healthy living through classroom, laboratory and field experiences.

The program is recognized nationally by the Canadian Society of Exercise Physiologists and will ladder into Camosun’s upcoming Sport and Fitness Leadership applied degree program to be offered in September 2008.  The diploma will also transfer toward university degree programs in sport science, physical therapy, exercise and wellness and public health.

The Exercise and Wellness program is the first in a series of sport and exercise education programs for Camosun College.  Over the next two years, the College plans to expand its offerings to diplomas in Sport Management, Athlete and Coach Development and an applied degree in Sport Leadership serving in excess of 400 students.
