LocationThe Sport Innovation and Research Center is located in the nation's premier sport education and training centre. This 80,000 square foot facility serves over 500 college students and is home to world-class athletes, physiologists, and sport technology researchers. It houses state-of-the art community and high performance fitness centres, a double gymnasium, a fully lit multi-sport playing field, and a sport medicine clinic. This facility also operates a high performance testing and monitoring lab dealing with Olympic, Paralympics, and regional athletes and assists them in powering their sport performance. HistoryThe Pacific Institute of Sport Excellence is a partnership initiative of Camosun College and Canadian Sport Centre Pacific, a leader in the delivery of programs, services and expertise in performance sport across the country. Excellence in education, performance and innovation are the cornerstones of PISE's activities. Through the Institute's new Sport Innovation Centre, Dr. Tim Walzak, BC Regional Chair of Sport Technology at Camosun and Dr. Gord Sleivert, Vice President of Sport Performance for Canadian Sport Centre Pacific, have partnered to develop performance advancing products not only for the benefit of our elite athletes but for the health and well-being of all Canadians. Aims1) At the Sport Innovation Centre our work focuses initially on high performance Olympic and Paralympics athletes. One of our mandates is to combine leading-edge technology and applied research to address various team and individual needs as they emerge in training and competitions. 2) Another area of SPIN focus is on product testing and prototype development. Our team has access to not only the aforementioned high performance athletes but also to world-leading sports scientists and rehabilitation experts across Canada. We are able to establish and build connections between the ideas generated from basic sport research, the athletic performance community, and the product development business. 3) New textile and sensor technology developed through the SPIN Centre at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence will provide Victoria, and the region, a unique capability in an important new economic sector. The ongoing work in advancing human performance will position Vancouver Island as a break-through leader in sport technology development throughout Canada and around the world. |
