Projects and Research

Imagination and innovation are vital to expanding and discovering new ways that sport technology research can benefit all. With its collaborative model and access to elite individuals and teams the Sport Innovation Centre perfectly situated to advance the field of applied research for sports and active lifestyle participants.

Areas of Expertise

A) Integrating Capabilities

Team

Our partnerships with Canadian Sport Pacific, Camosun College Applied Research Program, and a large number of local technology and applied research partners highlights our ability to assemble a team of dedicated professionals that can comprehensively undertake and complete projects.

Data Integration

The CSC Pacific performance testing laboratory, the notational video analysis centre, and SPIN's current applied research efforts; sensor development, clothing and materials testing, wireless communications, and thermal management - can all be incorporated into tests for sporting applications. Exclusive access to Olympic caliber athletes ensures a robust data verification process.

Partner Development

The Sport Innovation Centre's primary goal for industry interaction is to bring partners into project development opportunities as soon as possible, contributing to quicker commercialization cycles by facilitating prototype development and technology transfer.

B) Facilitating Collaboration

We are equipped with technologically advanced testing apparatus and prototyping equipment. Our expert personnel can be assembled and combined in numerous ways facilitating a wide variety of initiatives that can translate sport technology concepts into commercial opportunities.

Our aim is to collaborate with industry and organizational partners in a wide range of innovative projects.

C) Innovative Applications and Solutions

  • Advanced quantitative testing of fabric properties supply scientific data essential to understanding the function of performance and lifestyle apparel - The CSC Pacific expertise in human performance testing provides an additional and comprehensive assessment to the quantitative testing process
  • Combining both the quantitative and qualitative physiological measures of performance fabric testing leads to a complete and representative assessment of lifestyle and performance apparel
  • Rapid prototyping for sports competitions and testing environments
  • Sensor evaluation, calibration, and custom designed applications for use by both Olympic and Paralympics athletes for training and performance advancement
  • Flexible testing options include physical, laboratory, and field scenarios
  • Manufacturing advice
  • Commercial partnership opportunities (sports, medical, industrial)

Current Projects

  • Advanced Mobile Environmental Chamber: Camosun College and Canadian Sport Centre Pacific collaborated to develop a "first of its kind" testing lab in Canada. This mobile chamber not only allows for testing of athletes in varied environments (+ 40 degrees C. down to - 20 degrees C.), it also provides fitness, health and activity testing for local school and community sport events. Novel sensor and engineering application development work can be performed as well.
  • "SMART" textiles and materials - for sport, recreation, rehabilitation, and ergonomics
  • Thermal management for performance wear
  • Pressure and force plate sensors for a wide variety of sport and rehabilitation applications
  • Sleep and eye-tracking sensors and monitoring
  • Assistive devices for disabled persons (Paralympics and general population)

Past Projects

As projects are completed and the information about the work that SPIN has undertaken can be released we will post the project summaries in this section.

Partners

Existing collaborative partnerships between Camosun College, its Centre for Applied Research and Innovation, along with Canadian Sport Centre Pacific, the University of Victoria Innovation Development Corporation, Own the Podium, Rowing Canada, the Vancouver Island Technology Park and several national sport organizations allow for partnership opportunities in prototype development, field testing and manufacturing.
